With an area of 108 square miles (280 km2), Mount Desert Island is the second largest island on the eastern seabord of the United States of America, behind Long Island (in New York). With a population of about 10,600, it offers a diverse variety of accomodation. It got its name from the French explorer Samuel de Champlain in 1604, because of the high barren peaks he saw. He named it Isle des Monts Desert (in french it means Island of the barren mountains).

Mount Desert Island is home of Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor, its biggest town.
