Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse in Mount Desert Island - Maine

Fotos en el album: 40

Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse is located on a cliff at the southern tip of Mount Desert Island, Maine (inside the Acadia National Park). It was built in 1858 and it has a height of 56 feet (17 meters).

In 1876, a fog bell and a tower were added. Later, in 1898, that bell was replaced by a larger 4,000 pound (1,812 kg) bell. In 1988 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Nex to it, there is a well-preserved keeper's house with minor changes since it was built in 1858. However the keeper's house is not used anymore.

The Bass Harbor cliff where the lighthouse stands on, offers stunning views of the islands, mountains and cliffside landscapes around.
To get here, travel southwest on Route 1A from Bangor to Ellsworth. From Ellsworth travel south on Route 3 to Trenton, Maine and continue across the causeway onto Mount Desert Island. Once in Mount Desert Island, follow Route 102 all across the island to the south. Before the entrance to the town of Tremont, located in the southern part of the island, follow Route 102A south. Where the route turns left, follow straight on Lighthouse Road to the end of the road at the southern tip of the island.
